Annual data is presented on harvesting and long-distance transportation.  Harvesting costs are presented by felling methods and roundwood assortment. Information on costs and transportation distances by roundwood assortment and transportation methods is available on long-distance transportation.

Categories

The unit costs of harvesting are presented by felling method and roundwood assortment. Felling methods are divided into first thinning, other thinning and regeneration felling. The unit costs of long-distance timber transportation are examined by transportation method and roundwood assortment. Transportation methods are classified into road, rail and water transportation. Roundwood assortment is divided into logs and pulpwood and further into pine, spruce and hardwood.

Data collection and sources

Metsäteho Oy compiles annual data on shareholders’ timber harvesting and long-distance timber transportation performances and costs. Shareholders of Metsäteho Oy include the largest forest industry companies and Metsähallitus.

The information is compiled annually after Metsäteho has published the figures.

Time series

Information on industrial roundwood long-distance transportation methods and the mean transportation distances and long-distance transportation costs is available from 1982 onwards. Information on unit costs in harvesting and long-distance transportation is available from 1985 onwards. Information on unit costs of mechanised harvesting and long-distance transportation by roundwood assortment is available from 2000 onwards.
