Description

The Producer Prices for Agricultural Products statistics measure the prices received by farmers for their products. They contain data on the producer prices for milk, meat, eggs, grain, turnip rape, oilseed rape and food potatoes. Both monthly and annual prices are given.

Content

The statistics follow the absolute prices received by farmers for their agricultural products. The producer prices for milk, meat and eggs use the on-farm price. The prices for grain, turnip rape and oilseed rape include delivery to the first collection point, while the price for food potatoes includes delivery to the packaging plant. Producer prices are recorded separately by quality class for each product and as an average for all quality classes.

Categories

Product classification is based on the categories used by the EU and FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) in their price statistics. The categories are supplemented with major Finnish products. The quality class and production method classifications for eggs are based on the EU regulations for trade in eggs.

Data is available for the whole of Finland.

Data collection and sources

Luke gathers data using a monthly questionnaire sent to companies that purchase agricultural products from farms. Information on milk adjustment payments is collected once a year. There are usually a total of six data collections from five different target groups: dairies, slaughterhouses, egg packaging plants, companies that purchase cereals from farms, and potato packaging plants. Data on milk production aid is based on the Milk Quota Register administered by the Agency for Rural Affairs (Mavi).

Update frequency

Monthly prices are updated monthly. Annual prices and milk adjustment payments are updated annually.

Preparation and publication schedule

Monthly prices are published on the final day of the following month (or the next working day). The quality-adjusted grain prices are published with a two-month delay. The producer prices of turnip rape and rape are published with a three-month delay. Annual prices are published in February.

Time series

Comparable data is available from 1995 onwards. Producer prices for agricultural products have been recorded since the 1930s. Before Tike was established, price statistics were compiled by, for example, the Finnish National Board For Agriculture and the marketing research institute of Pellervo Confederation of Finnish Cooperatives.
