Trade of energywood, 4th quarter and year 2019

Fourth quarter of 2019

• During the fourth quarter, pruned stemwood made up half of all energywood trade recorded in statistics. Pruned stemwood was the most valuable energywood species as the average price paid for it was EUR 4.1 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 24.7 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The price increased by four per cent from the previous quarter in standing sales and decreased by four per cent in delivery sales.
• Logging residues made up two fifths of all purchased energywood . The average price paid for logging residues was EUR 2.8 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 17.5 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The unit price declined by nine per cent in standing sales and increased by three per cent in delivery sales.

Year 2019

• The average price paid for energywood was EUR 3.3 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 22.8 per cubic metre in delivery sales. Compared with the previous year, the average price decreased by 12 per cent in standing sales and increased by eight per cent in delivery sales in real terms (deflation: wholesale price index).
• The average price paid for pruned stemwood was EUR 4.0 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 25.9 per cubic metre in delivery sales. The price decreased by 12 per cent in standing sales and increased by six per cent in delivery sales.
• The average price paid for logging residues was EUR 2.9 per cubic metre in standing sales and EUR 17.3 per cubic metre in delivery sales. This was a reduce of 21 per cent in standing sales and an increase of 10 per cent in delivery sales to the year before.
• Of all trade recorded in statistics during the year, pruned stemwood made up 47 per cent and logging residues accounted for 43 per cent. Whole trees only covered seven per cent and stumps four per cent. However, the most common energywood species varied according to the trade method. Logging residues made up nearly half in standing sales and pruned stemwood accounted for three-fifths in delivery sales.
• The extent of data collection of statistic fluctuates. Excluding that, the energywood trade declined one fourth from the previous year. In standing sales the reduction was almost one third and in delivery sales it was five per cent. The trade was this slow only in 2016 since the compilation of statistics started in 2014.

The recorded prices are based on prices entered in wood trade agreements. Any other increments and services related to wood trade are not included in the statistics. The prices do not include government subsidies, due to which the prices may also be negative.

The information is not rounded up to correspond to the total non-industrial private wood trade in Finland. This means that the published wood volumes represent approximately half of the energywood purchased by forest industries from non-industrial private forests.
