The count and proportion of households engaged in recreational fishing in 2022 (Experimental statistics publication)

Published 4.12.2024

About 35 % of Finnish households fished during 2022. The most likely number of such households was 972 958. With a probability of 0.95, the number of fishing households was between 920 781 and 1 051 242, and with an 0.8 probability it was between 943 139 and 1 028 266.

  • The fisheries management fee was paid by a total of 166 657 households, of which most likely nearly 157 000, or about 94 %, engaged in fishing. Among the households that did not pay the fisheries management fee, about 30 % fished.
  • The number of fishing households is based on survey data collected by the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), information from Metsähallitus on households that have paid the fisheries management fee, population register data (Statistics Finland and the Digital and Population Data Services Agency). The assessments have also utilized information from 2014-2020 regarding recreational fishing. The proportions presented in the statistics are based on the most likely values for 2022. The calculation method is based on Bayesian statistics.
  • The estimates were published as an experimental statistic on a one-off basis. Experimental statistics describe new areas of phenomena, use new types of data, or are based on new calculation methods. Read more about experimental statistics on Statistics Finland's website (in Finnish).
