Description

The Recreational Fishing statistics include information on the number of recreational fishermen, catches and the use of different types of fishing methods.

Content

The statistics present the number of persons and household-dwellings that engaged in fishing, the number of those using different kinds of fishing methods, the number of fishing days and catches by species, region and fishing method.

Categories 

The regional division is based on the Fisheries Units of the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres). In addition, regions in inland waters are divided on the basis of Regional State Administrative Agencies and in marine areas on the basis of regional borders between Uusimaa – Southwest Finland, Southwest Finland – Satakunta and Ostrobothnia – Central Ostrobothnia. This division differs slightly from the previously used regional division of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES).

Data collection and sources

The data is collected with a postal survey. The sample is taken from the population information system maintained by the Population Register Centre. Data is collected from household-dwellings, the statistical unit of the survey.  Recreational fishing refers to all fishing by Finnish household-dwellings (including crayfish), with the exception of fishing by professional fishermen and their household-dwellings. The statistics do not include fishing by foreign travellers in Finland or fishing by Finns abroad.

Update frequency

The statistics are published biennially.

Preparation and publication schedule

The Recreational Fishing statistics are published by the end of October of the year after the statistical year. No preliminary information on the Recreational Fishing statistics is published.

Data is available from the database as from 1998 onwards.
