Number of beekeepers

20.11.2017 Updated 12.9.2025

The majority of beekeepers have a small number of hives and beekeeping is a hobby for them.

In Finland, the national aid per hive is granted to beekeepers who have at least 15 colonies of overwintering bees.

In 2024, there were 2 900 beekeepers. These keepers had at least one hive. There were 45 keepers with more than 150 hives and a total of 12 807 hives. According to the Finnish Beekeepers' Association, there were 86 544 winterized hives in total in 2024.

Although only a few percent of beekeepers have more than 100 hives, the number of hives managed by these professionals represents about half of all hives in Finland and most of the Finnish honey harvest comes from their hives.
