Agricultural entrepreneurial income
On this page
The income level in agriculture and its development are linked to one of the key objectives of the CAP for the period of 2023–2027:
- Providing support to ensure a fair income for farmers and the resilience of agriculture throughout the EU to improve long-term food security and diversity in agriculture, and to ensure the financial sustainability of agricultural production in the EU.
In addition, Finland has set the following national effectiveness goal for 2023–2027, to which this indicator is significantly linked:
- With the CAP measures, agricultural entrepreneurial income can be maintained at a level that ensures domestic food production.
Changes in agricultural entrepreneurial income have been presented in relation to year 2005=100 (orange curve) and in relation to the previous year (blue curve). Entrepreneurial income represents the income received by agricultural entrepreneurs for their work and capital. Compared with 2005, entrepreneurial income was at its highest in 2022 when the index value was 141, and at its lowest in the 2000s in 2015 when it was roughly 65% of the 2005 level. In 2024, the index value was 131.
The index values of entrepreneurial income are calculated by Statistics Finland, mainly using the economic accounts for agriculture (EAA) delivered to Eurostat as source material. In addition to the agricultural entrepreneurial income data compiled by Statistics Finland, the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) collects financial data on agriculture for the FADN database and for nationally used additional services in the Economydoctor service. Between Statistics Finland and Luke, definitions and data update schedules differ slightly regarding agricultural entrepreneurial income, for example.

Description of the indicator
Entrepreneurial income per agricultural entrepreneur is calculated by deducting salaries paid to employees, paid interest and rents paid for the use of fixed assets from factor income. The resulting figure is divided by the amount of unpaid agricultural workforce. Therefore, entrepreneurial income represents the salary received by the entrepreneur and interest on equity. It indicates financial development in the industry.
Net agricultural entrepreneurial income differs from the above so that entrepreneurial income is not divided by the number of entrepreneurs. Annual entrepreneurial income is calculated at a fixed price, i.e. it represents changes in total entrepreneurial income.

The indicator will next be updated in autumn 2026.
