Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products by country 2024 (provisional)

In 2024, the value of exported forest industry products totalled EUR 12.0 billion, covering 17% of Finland’s exports of goods. The value of imported forest industry products was EUR 1.5 billion, comprising 2% of total exports of goods. The most important trading partners were Germany and China in exports, and Estonia and Sweden in imports.

Forest Industry Exports

  • Exports of forest industry products totalled EUR 12.0 billion, up by almost 1% from the previous year in real terms (deflated using the wholesale price index, 1949=100). The share of the forest industry of the total value of Finland’s goods exports increased to 17%.
  • Of the forest industry’s export revenue, 60% came from Europe and 21% from Asia. The most significant export countries remained unchanged: Germany accounted for 11%, China for 10% and the USA for 9%.
  • The wood products industry’s export revenue exceeded EUR 3.0 billion, being 2% more than in the previous year in real terms. Exports of sawn goods totalled 8.2 million cubic metres, with Europe accounting for 48% as in the previous year. The value of sawn goods increased by 7% to almost EUR 2 billion.
  • The pulp and paper industry’s export earnings remained nearly unchanged from 2023. Pulp exports totalled 4.1 million tonnes, down by 9% from the year before. The value of pulp exports decreased to EUR 2.6 billion (-5%). While paper exports totalled 2.7 million tonnes (+4%), the value of paper exports decreased slightly (-1%).
  • Paperboard was again the product group with the highest export value at almost EUR 3.3 billion (+5%). Paperboard exports totalled 3.6 million tonnes (+9%).

Imports of forest industry products and wood

  • Finland’s wood imports were 5.6 million cubic metres (+11%). Of all imported wood, pulpwood accounted for 57%, wood chips for 31% and logs for 2%. The remaining 10% consisted of fuelwood and by-products. The value of wood imports was EUR 0.4 billion (+9%).
  • Most roundwood was imported from Latvia, 2.2 million cubic metres, up by 43% from the previous year. It was followed by Estonia at 1.7 million cubic metres.
  • The import volume of sawn goods increased by 11%, while the import value decreased slightly to EUR 37 million (-1%). The import volume of sawn goods of 52,000 cubic metres still covers only a tenth of the volume previously imported from Russia.
  • Sweden was the most significant import country for forest industry products (EUR 0.28 billion). It was followed by Estonia (EUR 0.23 billion). Imports from Estonia decreased by almost 18%.
