Foreign trade in roundwood and forest industry products, 1/2023 (preliminary)

In January, the exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 1.23 billion. Most exported products were from the pulp and paperboard industries. The forest industry accounted for 20% of the total value of Finland’s goods exports.

Wood imports

• In January wood imports totalled 0.53 million cubic meters. Of imported wood 60% was pulpwood, 23% chips and 2% logs. The remaining 14% consisted of fuelwood and by-products wood, such as wood pellets.
• Of imported wood 31% originated from Estonia and 30% from Latvia. From Sweden came 29% of imported wood in January.

Exports of the forest industries

• In January the exports value of forest industry products totalled EUR 1.23 billion and increased from previous year’s January in real terms by 11% (deflated using wholesale price index, 1949=100).
• At the same time the exports value of wood-products industries totalled EUR 0.26 billion and decreased in real terms by 24% compared to previous year. The most important product, sawn-goods, accounted for 63% of the wood-products industries’ export earnings at EUR 0.16 billion.
• The exports value of pulp and paper industries was EUR 0.97 billion and increased by 27% compared to January previous year. The most important export product was bleached sulphate pulp, which accounted for a third of the pulp and paper industries’ export earnings at EUR 0.32 billion. The second largest export, EUR 0.17 billion, was multilayer coated cardboard and paperboard from the paperboard industries (in the statistics "other coated paperboard").
