Foreign trade in fish 2024

Fish and fish products worth approximately EUR 560 million were imported into Finland for human consumption in 2024. However, EUR 177 million of this was fresh whole salmon exported to other European countries. The value of products imported for human consumption, excluding salmon exports, was EUR 391 million. The value of products imported for purposes other than human consumption was slightly less than EUR 9 million.

  • The most important imported products in terms of value were fresh whole salmon, fish products and preserves, and fresh salmon and trout fillets.
  • The value of products exported for non-human consumption was EUR 16 million.
  • The volume of fish products imported for human consumption was 78 million kilograms.
  • The most important countries of origin for fish and fish products were Norway (EUR 353 million), Sweden (EUR 57 million) and the Netherlands (EUR 20 million).
  • Of the total imports, 58 percent (51 million kilograms) came from Norway. The largest import was fresh whole sea trout for human consumption (43 million kilograms), of which 27 million kilograms were exported as such. Other imports included fresh salmon fillets and shrimp.
  • Just under 10 million kilograms of fish and fish products were imported from Sweden and just under 4 million kilograms from Germany.
  • The volume of products exported for human consumption was 92 million kilograms. A total of 10.5 million kilograms were exported for purposes other than human consumption.
  • The main export destinations for fresh whole salmon were the Netherlands (EUR 36 million) and France (EUR 32 million). The majority of exports of other products went to Estonia (EUR 32 million). Most of the exports of other products went to Estonia (EUR 32 million).
