Access to valuable and endangered Bothnian Bay fish stocks
On this page
Keminmaa research infrastructure focuses on the conservation of genetic resources of fish stocks in the Bothnian Bay and its tributary rivers, the cultivation of river lamprey, and the quarantine hatching of fish eggs. The facility also enables experimental setups related to fish feeding, growth, survival, welfare, and biodiversity.
The service is primarily intended for researchers and research groups to conduct various experiments. It includes access to the aquaculture facilities and outdoor tank areas, basic aquaculture equipment, and support from professional staff for experiments.
The service includes reserved cultivation tanks and preparation of the necessary equipment, conducting agreed tests and observations during the experiment, collecting samples and data, and delivering measurement results. The conditions during the experiment can be reported.
Sample collection
Observation of experiments, collection and pre-processing of biological samples as agreed.
Target groups
Researchers, research groups, research communities, research networks, research projects, research organizations, companies.
Access type
- Physical, remote or hybrid access.
- Minimum reservation period: 1 week.
- Rearing tanks of various sizes available for reservation. Tank-specific needs must be negotiated.
Service usage restrictions
- Activities must follow Luke’s guidelines, considering biosafety risks.
- Research can only be conducted on fish currently reared at the facility.
- The number of tanks and fish available for research use varies depending on the needs of conservation breeding programs.
- Use of chemicals must be agreed upon separately.
- Research must not cause long-term harm or reduce the usability of the infrastructure after the study period
Information to support the application
- Describe the conditions required for your experiment as accurately as possible.

- Special equipment required.
- Species/number/age or size class used in the experiment.
- Describe the details related to the care of the eggs or fish during the experiment.
- Describe the experimental treatments, data collection, and required monitoring information for the experiment.
