Access to Otolith laboratory

Research Infrastructures
Enables age determination of fish otoliths and mammal bones.
Supports fish stock assessment and mammal research in particular.
Versatile equipment allows for customization of methods.

The otolith laboratory prepares fish otoliths and mammal ossifications for age determination. The service supports fish stock assessment and mammal research in particular, and is suitable for a wide range of research needs for different species.

The laboratory processes thousands of otoliths annually and prepares samples from several different fish species.

In terms of mammal research, the laboratory processes seal tooth samples and is also testing the processing of elk, reindeer, and deer ossification samples. The same method can be used to process the teeth of other mammals, and test series have been carried out on samples from roe deer and forest reindeer, for example.

The methods used for sample preparation, imaging, and aging can be tailored to new species and research needs. The versatile equipment supports a wide range of research setups. The laboratory operates flexibly in accordance with different protocols and continuously develops methods in collaboration with researchers.
