Quantum computing applications for future genomes and biomaterials

Q-GEN WP2

In an era of intensifying global race for new technologies strengthening Europe’s competitiveness has become a strategic priority. In parallel, societies face persistent challenge of aligning economic progress with planetary boundaries increasing the need for resource efficiency and new bio-based materials. In this context, Finland holds a distinctive advantage through its globally recognised expertise in quantum technologies and biological sciences. Q-GEN leverages these national strengths to create a pioneering multi-actor innovation ecosystem at the intersection of quantum computing, genomics and sustainable bio-based industries.

Q-GEN lays out foundations for quantum enhanced bioeconomy by integrating quantum algorithms, advanced modelling and multilayer biological data with applications in biomaterials, genomic prediction and next-generation breeding technologies. In addition to an ambitious research project, Q-GEN functions as an ecosystem-building initiative that mobilises leading scientific organisations, industry partners and early adopters to co-develop new technological capabilities and commercialisation pathways. Hence, the initiative contributes directly to the objectives of both Finland’s quantum strategy and the EU bioeconomy strategy, strengthening Europe’s technological leadership and industrial competitiveness.

By embedding ethical considerations, strategic foresight and stakeholder collaboration into technology development, Q-GEN promotes responsible innovation by anticipating and adapting to emerging regulatory and societal conditions. Hence, the initiative cultivates interdisciplinary expertise across quantum science, biology and data-driven innovation strengthening Finland’s competence base and talent pipeline at large. Through this integrated approach, Q-GEN positions Finland as a global leader in quantum enhanced bioeconomy innovations and builds the foundation for long-term scientific excellence, industrial renewal and sustainable material solutions.
