Biological control of the strawberry mite using fungal pathogens (Entomopathogenic fungi as part of integrated pest management for the strawberry mite)

Meta-Punkki

Strawberry mites are tiny pests that hide in young, developing leaves, making them difficult to detect and control. Their feeding can damage plants, restrict growth and reduce yield. The Meta-Punkki project investigates how the beneficial fungus Metarhizium can be used alongside predatory mites to improve biological control in strawberry production. Greenhouse and on-farm trials assess different application methods and treatment combinations by monitoring pest and predatory mite populations, plant damage and growth. The project also investigates whether the fungus can establish inside strawberry plants and contribute to protection against mites. To support this research, an AI-assisted image analysis method is being developed to help count mites in samples. Grower discussions and events bring practical experience into the project and provide opportunities to share findings. The aim is to identify effective, practical approaches that strengthen integrated pest management and reduce reliance on chemical pesticides.
