The aim of the project is to promote biogas production and nutrient recycling in North Savo. New types of cost-effective solutions for biogas production will be developed, taking into account the different needs and backgrounds of different farms, as well as new solutions and technologies. In order to increase biogas production, more information is needed on new business opportunities and logistic solutions that have a significant impact on the profitability of the farm.
The project will investigate and develop best practices for the digestate processing, minimizing nitrogen losses through digestate separation and acidification, new feedstocks for farm-scale biogas production, measurement of greenhouse gas emissions from biogas plants and feedstock traceability. The aim of these actions is to promote sustainable renewable energy production and improve nutrient recycling, thereby improving the operation conditions of agriculture and contributing to food security. Biogas production can enhance the vitality of rural areas and create new business opportunities in the transition to renewable energy production.
The development of biogas production approaches will be developed in cooperation with municipalities and agricultural producers in the region, as well as with the food industry, the biogas sector and transport operators, and the project aims to promote the development of cooperation and networking. In addition to Luke, the project will be implemented by Savonia University of Applied Sciences and the University of Eastern Finland.
