Fisheries revenues increased slightly in 2022

News 17.6.2024

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine had a major impact on the fisheries industry in 2022 especially due to increased energy costs. Revenues in the fisheries sector slightly recovered after the difficult pandemic years but remained below the 2019 level. The total revenue of fishing enterprises amounted to roughly €942 million, employing 2,125 person-years in the sector.

A total of 1,780 companies operated in the fishery industry in 2022. The data concern companies that are engaged in commercial fishery, aquaculture, fish processing, wholesale and retail. For inland fishery, statistics only include class 1 commercial fishermen. Of all fishery industry companies, some 77 per cent were fishing companies, with most of these being small companies operating in coastal areas.

The majority of fisheries revenues were generated by fish processing (47%) and wholesale fish trade (31%).

"The total amount of fisheries revenues reached EUR 942 million. Revenues increased in 2022 in the fish wholesale trade, aquaculture, and fish retail trade sectors, but declined in all other sectors. Overall, revenues increased by EUR 45.4 million. 152 million of the revenues were generated in primary production, of which commercial fisheries accounted for just over EUR 51 million", says researcher Lauri Vesala.

The net result for marine fisheries was EUR 3.7 million. The best result (EUR 14. 4 million) was recorded by fish wholesalers. The net result of inland fishing companies was around EUR 1.8 million, while the result of fish processing companies severely deteriorated to a loss of EUR 10.7 million. The result of retail trade slightly increased to EUR 0.4 million. Despite an increased result, aquaculture companies accrued losses of EUR 4.5 million. The value added generated by the fisheries sector amounted to approximately EUR 142 million and employment to 2 117 man-years.
