Expert workshop: Carbon stock calculations in the Life Cycle Assessments for biobased products: framework, modelling and applications

News 15.11.2022

The Bio-LCA project is funded by Business Finland and several Finnish companies involved in the biobased industry.  The aim of the project is to develop further the methodology of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in order to better take into account the special features of biobased production.

One of the central issues of the climate sustainability of biobased products is the fact that the whole bioeconomy is based on the carbon uptake from the atmosphere. Therefore, modelling of the changes in the biobased carbon stocks in biomass, soil and products is a central part of the sustainability assessment of bioproducts. To demonstrate the recent development in this area, we are organizing an expert workshop on the topic of biobased carbon modelling and its applications in LCA on Wednesday 23 November at 2 pm Finnish time. In this workshop, we will have three keynote presentations and general discussion.

Schedule (Finnish time):

  • 14:00-14:05 Welcome and goals of the workshop
  • 14:05-14:45 Keynote talk 1: A general framework for carbon stock calculations in LCA, Ilkka Leinonen, Luke
  • 14:45-15:15 Keynote talk 2: The Scottish Government Strategic Research Programme: the role of LCA and carbon modelling, Michael MacLeod, Scotland’s Rural College
  • 15:15-15:30 Coffee Break
  • 15:30-16:00 Keynote talk 3: An introduction to the farm carbon calculator Agrecalc:  Recent development related soil and biomass carbon stocks, Rachael Ramsay and Kaia Waxenberg, SAC Consulting
  • 16:00-16:20 General Discussion
