Description and content

The statistics comprise information on total wood consumption in Finland. They comprise the consumption of roundwood and forest industry by-products and wood residues by the forest industries to manufacture forest industry products, as well as solid wood fuels and fuelwood used in energy generation in small-scale housing and heating and power plants. The information on roundwood/stemwood is given as solid volumes, cubic metres over bark. Data on forest industry by-products and wood residues are recorded as solid volumes under or over bark, depending on the notices of use. This information is used to monitor the total consumption of wood.

Categories

Wood consumption by the forest industries and in energy generation is expressed as total volumes for roundwood and forest industry by-products and wood residues by region (until 2014, by regional units of the Public Services at the Finnish Forest centre). More precise information are presented in the publications of the statistics.

  • Forest industries' wood consumption
  • Wood in energy generation
  • Wood consumption in small-scale housing
  • Small sawmills

Data collection and sources

The information on industrial wood consumption is mainly based on the information collected by the Finnish Forest Industries Federation from its member companies. Information for other forest industry companies is collected directly by Natural Resources Institute. Information on solid wood fuels consumed by heating and power plants in energy generation is collected annually from the plants. Information for fuelwood consumption in small-scale housing and roundwood consumption by small sawmills have been collected every 10 years or so by conducting separate sample surveys.

Update frequency

The statistics are compiled annually.

Preparation and publication schedule

Statistics are available some five months after the reporting year.

Time series

OSF information is available mostly from 1955 onwards and other information from 1860 onwards.
