Description

Information is presented about the total consumption of energy and about different energy sources. In addition, information is also available on electricity consumption and mill fuels of the forest industries, chipping methods of forest chips as well as peat production, consumption and foreign trade.

Content

Data on the total consumption of energy and the use of fossil and renewable energy are presented in two energy units: terajoules and terawatt hours. Mill fuel consumption is available in terajoules and electricity consumption by the forest industries is available in gigawatt hours. Volume and weight data as well as energy unit data are provided about production, consumption and foreign trade of peat. The chipping methods of forest chips are presented in percentage values.

Categories

Energy sources are divided into wood fuels, hydro power, wind power, peat, oil, coal, natural gas, nuclear energy, net imports of electricity and other energy sources.

Mill fuels are classified into fossil fuels, wood fuels, peat, and other fuels. Fossil fuels are further divided into oil, coal and natural gas. Wood fuels are sub-divided into black liquor and other concentrated liquors, and solid wood fuels.

Electricity consumption by the forest industries is classified according to the TOL 2008 (Standard Industrial Classification) into wood-products industries and pulp and paper industries.

Peat production is divided into peat for energy production, horticultural peat, peat used as bedding, and environmental peat.

The chipping methods of forest chips are divided into chipping at plant, at the terminal, by the roadside and on the terrain and further according to the raw materials, which are small-sized trees, logging residues, stumps and large-sized timber.

Data collection and sources

Statistics Finland provides information on energy consumption, electricity consumption by the forest industries and mill fuels of forest industries. The information on peat production, consumption and foreign trade is provided by the Bioenergy Association of Finland and Statistics Finland. Data on chipping methods of forest chips used by heating and power plants are provided by Metsäteho Oy.

Update frequency

The data update has ended.

Preparation and publication schedule

The information will be published on the Natural Resources Institute Finland’s website as soon as it is released by the original producers of the data.
