Extraction and fractionation pilot

Research and development services

In Luke’s Extraction and fractionation pilot, we carry out research and test new, innovative solutions for effective utilisation of different biomasses and industrial side. Luke helps companies to refine and develop biomasses into new additives and products with higher value, and thus create new business opportunities.

Benefits to customers

Extraction and fractionation pilot offers an easy and quick way to pilot new production processes and increase the refining and utilisation rate of biomass. In Extraction and fractionation pilot, companies can do piloting resource- and cost effectively without having to build their own piloting equipment. Testing done in the pilot scale reduces the risks associated with the transition to actual production. Anticipating the production issues speeds up the process scaling up.

Services

Service packages are tailored to the customer’s specific needs. Ideally, the service is constant co-operation taking into account the situation and needs. Testing and analysis services include for example:

  • Needs assessment
  • Preliminary surveys
  • Planning of the tests
  • Raw-material acquisition
  • Extractions and fractionations
  • Manufacturing product models or products, and testing their features
  • Analysing the test results together with the customer
  • Recommendations of next steps to develop the products manufacturing process

Applications

There is a wide range of side streams in the forest industry. For example, approximately 10% of wood’s volume is bark. Different components can be separated from the wood bark and used for example as preservatives. Furthermore, they can be used to produce biobased wood preservatives to replace synthetic materials. Carbohydrates (soluble fibers), that promote human health and wellbeing, can be separated from sawdust and used for example in food or cosmetics industry.

Food industry produces also a lot of side-streams. Material from vegetables and root vegetables that end up to side streams can be up to one fourth of the original weight. Side-streams from berry, grain, oilseed and fish industries can also be used to produce new ingredients and products for food, cosmetics, and pharmacy industries.

Why to choose Luke?

Luke uses environmentally friendly methods to process biomass. For example, water or carbon dioxide are used in extractions, whereby no harmful solvent waste or residues are generated in process. Luke has a strong knowledge of biomass-based on long-term research, and up to- date technology for processing them. Continuous research brings the latest knowledge of the development of the industry to your use.
