The project studies boreal forests that are particularly sensitive and vulnerable to climate change. The goal is to better understand and to predict how the changing growth conditions have affected and will affect forest growth in the future. This is achieved by applying novel analytical methods, which will improve the interpretation of climate signal in stable carbon (13C) and oxygen (18O) isotope composition of tree rings.
The project enables better interpretation of the climate signal in stable isotopes of tree rings, which can be used to produce better paleoclimate reconstructions and to predict the response of forests to climate change. The results will also improve knowledge of temporal variability in C allocation and water cycle in ecosystems. The data will be valuable for improving predictive skill of various models and for forestry and policymakers dealing with climate mitigation and adaptation strategies
