Small Forests - Big Player: Valorising small scale forestry for a bio-based economy

Aim is to understand the contribution of small forest owners in the transition to wood based bioeconomy in Europe. This includes 1) the evaluation of trade-offs between timber production, ecosystem services and forest resilience to climate change, 2) identifying tipping points in management behavior in relation to forest size, productivity and income, and 3) analysis of existing incentive and subsidy schemes and their effects on forest owners behavior in five European countries.

The results will be useful for decision making in EU, national and regional forest policy to determine how to mobilize wood based raw materials and other ecosystem services from small scale forestry.
