Recycling nutrients and energy of Canadian waterweed

Elodea II

The invasive alien species Canadian waterweed (Elodea canadensis) has spread to hundreds of lakes around Finland. In favourable conditions, such as those found in many lakes in the Koillismaa region of North-Eastern Finland, waterweed can grow extensively and fill an entire bay or in worst cases the whole lake. Waterweed causes severe damage to lake ecology restricting both the recreational and professional use of lakes. The aim of this project is to develop cost-effective methods for harvesting and handling waterweed and to find economically viable ways to utilise it.
