In 2016, Finnish slaughterhouses slaughtered a total of 281,000 bovine animals, resulting in 86 million kilogrammes of bone-in meat. This is two percent less than 10 years earlier. In the EU (28 countries), the corresponding meat production in 2016 totalled 7,798 million kilos, which is almost six percent less than 10 years earlier. Finland’s production accounted for 2% of EU production.
The largest producers of beef are France, with 1,462 million and Germany with 1,148 million kilos, followed by the UK with 912 million kilos, Italy with 810 million, Spain with 637 million and Ireland with 588 million kilos.
Beef production in Europe
In 2016, pork production in Finland totalled 190 million kilos, for which a total of over 2 million pigs were slaughtered. Pork production was 11 per cent lower than 10 years earlier. In the EU (28 countries), the corresponding meat production in 2016 totalled 23,563 million kilos, which is almost three percent more than 10 years earlier. Finland’s production accounted for less than one percent of EU production.
The largest producers of pork are Germany, with 5,579 million and Spain with 4,181 million kilos, followed by France with 2,206 million, Poland with 1,963 million, Denmark with 1,567 million, Italy with 1,544 million and the Netherlands with 1,453 million kilos.
Pork production in Europe
In 2016, 125 million kilos (= 69 million animals) of poultry meat was slaughtered in Finland. This is 32% more than 10 years earlier. No official EU level statistics on the total amount of poultry meat production are available. Finnish poultry meat production is estimated to account for approximately one percent of the EU’s total production.
The largest producers of poultry meat are Poland with 2,268 million kilos, the United Kingdom with 1,791 million and France with 1,669 million kilos, followed by Spain with 1,527 million, Germany with 1,525 million and Italy with 1,367 million kilos.
Poultry meat production in Europe
Almost 1.3 million kilos of sheep meat were produced in Finland in 2016. The amount has almost doubled in the last 10 years. Goat meat is not produced in Finland at all. No official EU level statistics on the total production of sheep meat and goat meat are available. Finnish sheep meat production is estimated to account for less than 0.2% of the EU’s total sheep and goat meat production.
The largest sheep and goat meat producers are the United Kingdom, with 290 million kilos, and Spain with 127 million kilos.
