Weekly monitoring of roundwood trade

The weekly monitoring of roundwood trade consists of information about roundwood trade by member companies of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation. The published unit prices of roundwood are averages from the previous four weeks, and the trading volumes are the realised volumes of the target week. The data presents weekly regional prices by type of trade, as well as the total volume of timber trade.

The monitoring information is updated once a week. The aim is to publish new information by 9 am on Tuesday following the target week.

Luke compiles statistics on industrial roundwood trade per month and calendar year. Luke’s statistics are more comprehensive than the weekly monitoring of prices, because they include not only the member companies of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, but also other wood buyers.

In 2025, Luke’s statistics recorded a timber trade volume of approximately 39 million cubic metres. Accordingly, the dataset in Luke’s timber trade statistics totalled just over 9 million cubic metres, which is 30 percent more than in the weekly timber trade monitoring conducted by the Finnish Forest Industries Federation.

Differences in the underlying datasets also lead to differences in average prices. According to Luke’s statistics, the average prices of the six main roundwood assortments were higher in 2025 than in the Federation’s weekly monitoring. The unit prices of all standing sales were on average 1.9 percent higher in Luke’s statistics, and in regeneration fellings on average 2.0 percent higher. For delivery sales, the average prices reported by Luke were 2.8 percent higher.

In this comparison, the annual average prises of the weekly monitoring have been calculated as the arithmetic mean of the weekly prices. Weighting the weekly prices by timber volumes was not possible, as the weekly monitoring does not publish volumes by sales method or roundwood assortment.

14 Jan 2020 Wood trade price regions were changed at the beginning of 2020 when the Kainuu–Pohjanmaa price region was divided into Pohjois-Pohjanmaa and Kainuu–Koillismaa regions.
