Vertical Pilot - Energy Efficient Crop Production with Vertical Farming

The project is carried out in a commercial-scale vertical facility, built by Kainuu Vocational School (KAO). The project is being implemented with KAO and Luke and it conducts practical pilot experiments with berry and vegetable plants and specialty plants. In project we are searching the potentials and limitations of new technology in nursery production. We are also determining the energy efficiency of production.
The project is part of two projects. In this project, production experiments are carried out and the possibilities to reduce production costs and the product's carbon footprint are assessed with climate control. The second part of the project aims to improve the energy efficiency of the vertical facility by increasing use of renewable energy. A solar power plant is built in connection with the vertical facility. The electricity-generating capacity of the solar power plant is calculated, and it is compared to the electricity consumption of the vertical facility.
