Cost-effective measurement of wood extractives for breeding of wood quality

TUIKEPUU

The aim of this project is to develop and experiment a fast, cost-effective and reliable optical technology to measure the extractive content of Scots pine, Pinus sylvestris L., heartwood. The target groups include forest tree breeding activities and forest genetics, forest owners, and wood product and building construction industries. The regional business life profits of the Lukes increased ability to provide services for the RDI activities of small and medium-sized enterprises.

This RDI project contributes to new and improved products as well as to material-efficient production technologies and services. New measurement technology would enable to breed for forest regeneration material able to produce decay resistant heartwood when aging. The technology would be applied in grading the heartwood timber according to its extractive content. The project strengthens the development and implementation of measurement technologies important for wood research and tree breeding
