The demand for raw wood material is increasing due to the rising trend of bioeconomy. The main objective of the project is to reduce the costs of forest regeneration chain by rationalizing seedling production in the nurseries. New techniques and production methods will be developed to promote production of high-quality seedling material. The aim is to transfer the gains from tree breeding programs to forestry by tailoring the nursery growth routines for genetically improved material.
The seedling inventory method will promote transition of plant cultivation from manual procedures, in which the decisions are basing on visual observations and tradition to interactive growth control processes that are basing on measured data. Guidelines for production of seedlings targeted at different outplanting windows, and for the growth procedures for genetically improved seedling material will be prepared. Environmentally friendly methods for growth control and IPM will be tested.
