Occurrence of pesticide residues in agricultural soils in northern climate

PesResValse

Project objectives

This study produces novel and comprehensive information on the occurrence of pesticide residues in agricultural soils across Finland. Specific aim is to compare soil contamination levels between various production systems (organic vs. conventional, plant production vs. livestock farm, crop type) and soil types.

The research questions comprise:

1) Is soil contamination by pesticide residues an issue in Finnish agricultural production/northern climate? What pesticide residues are present? WP2, 3 and 4

2) How does geographical location, soil type, crop selection and production system affect the / occurrence of pesticide residues? Is there a link between pesticide remains and reduced soil

biodiversity? WP3

3) What is the most environmentally sustainable production system in relation to estimated impacts of pesticide residues on soil functions, biodiversity, food safety and possible off-site transport of contaminants? WP2, 3 and 4.
