Root-related carbon fluxes – missing pieces in the boreal peatland carbon balance puzzle

This project aims at developing less labor-intensive methods for estimating fine-root production in peat soils, and estimating fine-root production and decomposition rates for a wider range of pristine peatlands and peatlands used for forestry. We further aim to estimate the production of extramatrical mycorrhizal mycelia in peatland forests. Our partners at the University of Helsinki focus on fine-root lifespan and turnover.

Improved methodologies for monitoring fine-root production in peatlands, data for models used in the greenhouse gas inventory for drained organic forest soils, scientific publications increasing our understanding of the rooting patterns and root-mediated carbon fluxes in peatlands, both pristine and drained for forestry.
