Managing uncertainty in sustainable forestry

In this project, we will assess the impact uncertainty will have on economic, ecological and societal sustainability. We will focus on inventory, growth model and ecological modelling uncertainties and introduce disturbance uncertainties. Through stakeholder interactions, we will develop stakeholder group specific scenarios based on the group’s interpretation of sustainability. These interpretations of sustainability will provide the framework to assess impacts and interactions between key sources of uncertainty. We anticipate a large variation in how the stakeholder groups will interpret sustainability, focusing on temporal continuity as well as spatial connectivity issues. To explore the connection between the various interpretations of sustainability, a multi-objective optimization approach will develop compromise solutions that balance the sustainability issues framed by all stakeholder groups.
