According to preliminary data of the Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke), approximately 14,000 farms were engaged in other business activities in addition to agriculture and horticulture in 2016. The number of farms has decreased from the previous survey. Other business activities mostly concern the production of various services.

The number of farms engaged in other business activities has decreased by 2,900 farms since 2013, when the previous statistics of other business activities were compiled. The number of farms engaged in other business activities has also decreased when examined relatively.

– In 2016, roughly 28 per cent of agricultural and horticultural enterprises were engaged in other business activities. In 2013, the corresponding figure was 30 per cent. says senior statistician Jaana Kyyrä from Luke.

Contracting, such as agricultural machine contracting, snow ploughing or road maintenance, is the most common form of other business activities carried out by agricultural and horticultural enterprises.

The significance of hired labour increases

Other business activities employed approximately 8,800 person years. Since 2013, the amount of other business activities has decreased by nearly 20 per cent. Hired labour worked nearly as much as farmers and shareholders of enterprises. Family members performed the lowest amount of work.

– The workload of hired labour is increasing, Kyyrä says.

In 2016, roughly 22,000 people worked on farms in other business activities. Half of these were farmers or shareholders of enterprises. Other business activities employed 7,500 hired employees and 3,500 family members. Other business activities employed 25 per cent fewer people in 2016 than in 2013.

Contracting is the most common business field

Contracting, such as agricultural machine contracting, snow ploughing or road maintenance, is the most common form of other business activities carried out by agricultural and horticultural enterprises. In 2016, roughly 7,000 farms acquired additional earnings through contracting. The production of various services is another common business field. Many farms obtain additional earnings from leasing out holiday homes and offering other travel services, as well as from various horse services.

This data published is preliminary. Final results that also include information by region and production sector and about the turnover of other business activities will be published next year.
