Joint position paper by Luke and Finnish aquaculture companies contributes to the development of European Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies.

Natural Resouces Institute Finland (Luke) and leading Finnish producers of farmed fish Kalaneuvos and Nordic Trout have put together a position paper on science-based views about the development of European freshwater aquaculture.

Consisting of five key messages about the current state of the industry and waterways, as well as future scenarios, the paper contributes to the European Green Deal and Farm to Fork strategies with the aim of more comprehensive and sustainable food policy, stronger economy and cleaner environment. Furthermore, the paper states that in order to reach above mentioned goals, strong and strategic research and innovation investments are necessary.

“Globally, aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food-producing sectors and now accounts for 50 percent of the world’s fish that is used for food. However, growth of aquaculture in EU is slow,” the authors say.
