The responsible food chain relates to the well-being and health of people, animals and the environment, alongside certain economic aspects.  In order for responsible food production to succeed, the different actors in society must have knowledge and understanding of sustainable choices.

The Natural Resources Institute Finland LUKE produces information on the importance of responsibility and the related indicators for various actors in the food chain, including businesses, stakeholders and consumers. In addition, LUKE provides actors with information on how responsibility can be developed at different stages of the chain and how such measures promote responsible choices by consumers. Research data is a prerequisite for responsible measures and choices.

The aim is to create a knowledge base in support of responsible choices and corporate responsibility efforts. This, in turn, supports the goals of sustainable development, to which the ecological, social and economic sustainability of consumption and economic activity are related.
