Climate change

Climate change will be a costly issue unless we manage to limit the global temperature increase to a maximum of 2° C. In Finland, rising temperatures and longer growth season may increase crop yields and growth rates of trees, but not without also increasing risks.

Microbes

Microbes make the forests and plants grow, keep the trees healthy, have a great importance in carbon cycle, turn the grass in cow’s stomach into energy, and help foods to preserve. Researchers believe that answers to many problems, such as combating climate change, lie in microbes.

Finnish bioeconomy in numbers

Luke monitors the developments in the Finnish bioeconomy using indicators that are based on the national accounts, compiled by Statistics Finland. The indicators are also used to assess the attainment of the goals set up in the Finnish Bioeconomy Strategy.

Agriculture

High-quality food and clean environment enhance people’s welfare both in the countryside and in cities.

Food and nutrition

A reliable food production system enables all the parties involved in the food chain to act responsibly and helps to promote public health.

Forest

Forests and their sustainable utilisation are a key source of wealth and wellbeing for Finns and one of the main backbones of the Finnish economy.

Fish and the fishing industry

Guidelines for the sustainable management of fish populations and research on fishing, fish production and consumption.

Game and hunting

Information on game species populations for ensuring their sustainable management.

Horticulture

High-quality domestic vegetables, flowers and berries produced in an environmentally friendly way for consumers and commerce.

Forest berries and mushrooms

Forest berries and mushrooms have many nutritional qualities.

Genetic resources

The Natural Resources Institute Finland has a statutory responsibility to maintain genetic resources and to conduct research relating to genetic resources used in primary production.

Recreational use of nature

Almost all Finns engage in outdoor recreation during the year.

Attractions

Natural Resources Institute Finland’s parks and forests provide knowledge and experiences for people of all ages.
