The Potato Laboratory at Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) is a research laboratory which also provides services in diagnosis and detection of potato diseases to seed potato companies and producers in Finland and Scandinavia.

Plant disease diagnostics is dynamic and evolving. Climate change, trade liberalization, emerging and reemerging pathogens pose serious diagnostic challenges. Researchers at the Luke Oulu Potato Laboratory are making constant efforts to develop and provide predictive diagnostic methods and policy support system for well informed decision making and risk management in the potato value chain and enhance the competitiveness of the seed potato sector.
We offer analysis services for detection of blackleg and soft rot bacterial pathogens and potato viruses. We assess the needs together with the customer and customize the service packages according to the customer’s wishes. We also provide expert advice on potato plant health matters.
The major tests currently carried out at the laboratory include detection of latent infections by five species of blackleg and soft rot bacterial pathogens using the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) and detection and identification of potato viruses using the Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Diagnostic methods are constantly being developed to meet the requirements of high quality potato production.
Luke Oulu laboratory specializing in potato analytics is unique in the Nordic countries; it is, for example, the only laboratory in the region providing diagnostic services for blackleg and soft rot bacterial pathogens using DNA based technology. Luke’s strengths include the identification and management of plant pathogens and molecular biology analysis methods.
