Designing crop cultivar ideotype and climate smart farming system for agriculture sustainable intensification

ClimSmartAgri

The general objective of the project is to develop a model-based framework to develop climate resilient crop cultivars and climate smart farming system to support sustainable intensification for future climate by integrating fragmented knowledge of crop modellers, agronomists, geneticists and breeders. The increasing collaboration between them would importantly enhance and fasten developing breeding and farming system for future climate. Here, we aim to effectively integrate fragmented data and knowledge from multiple disciplines to help improve resilience to climate risk.
The specific objectives are:
  1) To develop a modelling-based formwork that integrates agricultural system modelling with the long-term field trial data and wide multi-disciplinary knowledge.
2) To design crop cultivar ideotypes and climate smart farming systems under future climate change scenarios by optimizing the interactions between Genotype(G) × Management(M) × Environment(E) through agricultural system modelling.
3) To provide suggestions for stakeholders to develop climate smart agriculture, to produce more grain with less environment costs.

WP1: Integrating interdisciplinary data and knowledge
The long-term field trial data and interdisciplinary knowledge will be collected and analysed to diagnose the status and problems of the current farming systems. Interdisciplinary exchange workshops among geneticists, modellers, breeders and agronomists will be held where the interactive eco-physiological modelling tool will be used as a vehicle to enhance exchange and discussion and to integrate the inputs from inter-discipline.

WP2: Developing a model-based framework to design crop cultivar ideotypes and climate smart farming systems
By combining the long-term field trial data, multi-disciplinary knowledge, agricultural system modelling, and an advanced multiple objectives optimization function, crop cultivar ideotypes and climate smart farming systems under future climate change scenarios will be designed by optimizing the interactions between Genotype(G) × Management(M) × Environment(E) through agricultural system modelling.

WP3: Conducting field trials and evaluations
Iterations of generating results among multi-disciplinary experts and stakeholders will be performed and giving feedbacks on modelling G×M×E interactions and designing cultivar ideotype and farming system. Then, Conducting field trials to evaluate the suggested climate smart farming system.

WP4: Demonstrating, training and distribution
Demonstrating the successful knowledge, experiences and farming systems to various stakeholders including policy-makers, breeders, agronomists, and farmers. The findings will be demonstrated and widely distributed, providing suggestions for stakeholders to adopt climate smart agriculture.
