Preventing deforestation

This project studies deforestation as a phenomenon in Finland and analyses fee for changes to land use and other possible control measures for preventing deforestation. The subjects covered are the effectiveness of the control measures in mitigating deforestation and the resulting greenhouse gas emissions as well as the acceptability and administrative implementability of the control measures. In addition to climate impacts of deforestation, also impacts on water systems and biodiversity are considered.

The project combines quantitative calculation methods, qualitative assessments and reviews of previous research literature. The object is to provide insights in the prevention of deforestation in a way which is immediately utilisable in the design and implementation of the climate change policy of the land-use sector.
