Resolving genomic features related to immunological response to improve functional annotation of the bovine genome and produce tools for enhancing disease resistance in livestock

Mastitis Challenge

The aim of this project is to characterize genomic features related to immune response to improve functional annotation of the bovine genome (as part of the international FAANG community) and generate better tools for reducing mastitis in dairy cattle. For this aim we will combine results on candidate regions from two different approaches: 1) challenge experiment with two common pathogens differing in their pathogenicity, and 2) genome wide association studies in three cattle breeds. The project will improve functional annotation of the bovine genome providing information on genomic features related to host cell responses to specific pathogens. The research will provide tools for selection of animals better adapted to environmental challenges emerging with climate change (new pathogens) and for improved production, healthier animals and possibilities to reduce the use of antibiotics in animal production.
